The route to China is a hot route for a defined portion of its length, and that portion is the part worth planning around. From the Arabian Sea the track runs down toward the equator and the box stays in that band through the northern Indian Ocean, the Malacca and Singapore Straits and the lower South China Sea, before the coast turns northeast and the air cools. Thermal exposure on this lane is therefore not really a property of the cargo or of the packing at all. It is a property of how many days the box spends in that band, where it is stowed while it is there, and how long it stands still in the middle of it — and of those three, only the third is decided by anything a shipper chooses.

A container at sea is in a stack, shaded on several sides, in moving air, over water. A container in a transhipment yard is standing on concrete, in still air, frequently with no shade at all — and the hubs that serve this route sit close to the equator. The stage of the voyage with the highest thermal load is usually not the ocean leg. It is the dwell in the relay yard: the stage whose duration nobody quoted, which does not appear in a port-to-port transit time, and which lengthens by a full sailing interval rather than by a few hours when a connection is missed.
That has a consequence worth stating plainly, because it is not obvious from a freight comparison. A routing decision taken purely on rate is a thermal decision taken by accident. Two offers with the same headline transit time, one direct and one double-relayed, expose the cargo very differently even though the paperwork treats them as equivalent. Where the cargo is packed material bound for a receiver who needs discrete units at the melter, a direct call can be worth paying for on grounds that have nothing to do with speed.
The second variable is the stow, and nobody controls it. A box on an exposed top tier in direct sun sees far more heat than one below deck. Under-deck stowage can be requested and noted on the booking; it cannot be guaranteed, which is a reason to pack for the worst case rather than for the requested one.
不会发生的事 · What the heat does not do
Bitumen does not run out of a drum at these temperatures, and it is worth saying so before describing what does go wrong, because the alarmed version of this story circulates widely. Under JTG F40-2004 the softening point requirement for 70# is a minimum of 46 °C for A级, and for 50# a minimum of 49 °C for A级. Softening point is a consistency reference point, not a melting point — the binder becomes progressively soft and deformable long before it is anything like liquid. Nor does the heat of a voyage meaningfully age packed bitumen: oxidative ageing is driven by the temperatures of plant mixing and hot storage, which are in an entirely different range. A tropical crossing changes the condition of packed cargo, not its composition.

What arrives damaged is the product of exposure multiplied by time, and of the day-night cycle repeated. Three things follow from that, and a longer or more heavily relayed routing does not add new ones — it simply adds repetitions.
- Drums deform. A drum holds its shape partly because its contents are stiff; soften the contents and the lower tiers are carrying the stack. Bulging at the chime, slumping out of round and stressed closures and seams are the result. None of it is a specification failure and most of it is not a product loss, but deformed drums are slow to de-stuff, they generate condition claims, and they are what a receiving surveyor photographs.
- Bags consolidate. Bags do not deform, they merge. Pressed together under stack load in a hot box, twenty discrete one-tonne units can arrive as one mass that no longer separates. The certificate is untouched; the problem lands entirely at the melter, and therefore in the receiving-end stage of the schedule set out above.
- The box rains on its own cargo. Moisture already inside evaporates through the hot day, condenses on the cold steel roof at night and drips back down. Over weeks that rusts drum seams and closures and wets bag surfaces, and where a closure has already been stressed it opens a path into the product.
Only one of those three is measurable on a certificate, and it is the last: water content by ASTM D95 is limited to a maximum of 0.2 vol % on a typical export specification, and free water in a drum causes foaming and a genuine safety hazard when the material is heated at destination. What this page adds is the reason to take those decisions differently for a long, relayed, equatorial routing than for a short direct one, and the point in the process at which the routing is still changeable.
散装的情况正好相反 · For hot bulk, the voyage is not exposure — it is the ageing
Everything above concerns cargo that travels cold. A bulk parcel travels hot by design, and that inverts the analysis. The binder is held at temperature from the load port to the shore tank, so the sea leg is a heating period and a longer voyage is a longer heating period. That is oxidative ageing, and the Chinese acceptance table records it: mass change after RTFOT or TFOT must stay within ±0.8 %, and the retained penetration ratio must be at least 61 % for 70# A级. A binder that arrives already part-aged has spent some of its service life on the water.
Two consequences follow for a bulk shipment that do not apply to a packed one. Transit time becomes a technical variable to be discussed with the specification, not only a commercial one to be discussed with the freight. And the carriage condition sets the regulatory status: bitumen carried at or above 100 °C is UN 3257, Class 9, elevated temperature liquid, which changes the transport document, the marking and which carriers will accept it. Solid packed bitumen is generally not handled as a dangerous good. Neither blanket claim — always dangerous, never dangerous — survives contact with a real booking. 海运不改变的东西 · The one thing the voyage cannot touch
Routing, stowage, transit time and packing all act on the condition of the cargo. None of them acts on its composition. Wax content is set by the crude slate, and JTG F40-2004 caps it by the distillation method T 0615 at 2.2 % for A级, 3.0 % for B级 and 4.5 % for C级. If a cargo is going to fail a Chinese acceptance test on wax, it was going to fail before it was loaded, and choosing a shorter route or a cooler stow does nothing whatever about it. That is a load-port problem and it is solved at the load port, or it is not solved at all.
