This site publishes a lot of technical material on bitumen grades, specifications, test methods, handling and shipping. This page explains how to use it safely: which figures carry the weight of a published standard, which are common practice, why the edition matters more than the designation, and where a reader must stop relying on a web page.

Purpose

What the technical pages here are, and what they are not

A reference written from published standards, so a buyer can ask better questions and read a certificate critically.

These pages are written for a buyer placing an order, agreeing a specification and checking a document from a long way outside the refinery. The seller knows the product, the buyer knows the project, and the gap between them is where most disputes begin.

The content is assembled from published standards and ordinary trade practice, to do two things: help you ask the right question before the cargo loads, and help you read a Certificate of Analysis critically once it arrives. Where a figure is a measured property, the method that produces it is named beside it; where it is not, the table below says what it is instead.

What they cannot substitute for

  • The standard itself. A page citing ASTM D946 or EN 12591 summarises a document it does not reproduce. The standard carries the clause text, the conditioning requirements and the precision statement.
  • A laboratory test. No amount of reading tells you what is inside a drum. A sample drawn properly and tested by a named method does.
  • A qualified engineer's judgement. A binder decision belongs to whoever has seen the pavement temperatures, the traffic, the mix design and the code in force, and signs for the result.

The trouble is nearly always between the first row and the fourth. A standard limit can become an acceptance criterion; a practice figure cannot, because when the parties disagree there is no document to open.
Editions

A standard has editions, and the edition in your contract governs

Citing a designation names a document that exists in versions, and the version matters more than most buyers expect.

ASTM D946, EN 12591, IS 73, AASHTO M320 and GOST 22245 are all cited across this site, and none is a fixed text. A revision can tighten a limit, add or drop a property, change the method a property is measured by, or replace a grading system outright.

  • IS 73 — the 2013 edition replaced the penetration grades of the 1992 edition with viscosity grades. A specification written to the old edition and a certificate written to the new one do not share a vocabulary, let alone a limit.
  • AASHTO M320 — M332 now sits beside it, grading the same binders by multiple stress creep recovery. Agencies adopted them at different times and some run both.
  • GOST 22245 — still named in contracts although GOST 33133 exists alongside it, with different requirements for the same road bitumen.
  • EN 12591 and ASTM D946 — both carry a year in the full designation, and grade bands are not identical across versions.

A page here describes an edition. The edition named in your contract, or adopted by the code your project is built under, governs — often not the newest published, because authorities adopt on their own timetable.

So anyone writing an acceptance criterion must verify the limit against the edition they hold, not against this site. Write the designation into the contract with its year.

Practice against requirement

Figures that are common practice, not requirements

Several pages give figures that are ordinary industry practice rather than requirements of any standard. They are labelled as such where they appear. This is why the label matters.

A limit and a practice figure look identical: both are numbers with units. But a limit has a published clause, a committee and an edition. A practice figure has custom and experience.

Which figures here are practice

  • Handling and storage temperatures, and the ceiling above which oxidation takes over.
  • Mixing and compaction windows, where aggregate is coated and density is achieved.
  • Application rates for prime coat, tack coat and surface dressing.
  • Dosages and dilutions — polymer in a modified binder, cutter in a cutback, water in an emulsion tack coat.
  • Loading figures, which move with drum dimensions and weight limits.

Why one in a contract causes disputes

Written into a contract as a requirement, a practice figure creates an obligation with nothing behind it. When the parties disagree there is no clause to open and no issuing body to appeal to.

The concrete version: a clause saying the binder shall be mixed at 160 °C reads as precision. Then the mix design calls for 155 °C, the plant runs at 158 °C, and the cargo is non-conforming to a term nobody should have written.

Practice figures belong in the method statement and mix design, where the people watching the material can adjust them. Contract criteria should be measurable properties, each with a method and edition named.

Grade recommendations

Climate and grade guidance is directional, not a pavement design

Where a page suggests a grade for a climate or an application, it reasons towards a starting point. A design rests on inputs a website cannot see.

Measured pavement temperature

The temperature the binder actually reaches in the pavement, high and low — not the air temperature of a region.

Traffic loading and speed

Standing traffic at an intersection is a different problem from free-flowing highway at the same temperature.

The national code in force

The road authority sets the specification your engineer must satisfy, in a named edition. That code decides the grade.

Gradation, void content, plant type and laydown temperature interact with binder choice, and the mix design reconciles them.

Calculators

The calculators are arithmetic, not survey or design output

Three calculators run on this site, two of them on more than one page: tonnage and volume conversion, drum and container loading, and prime coat quantity. Each is arithmetic on stated assumptions.

The arithmetic is exact. The output is only as good as the assumptions printed beside it.

Tonnage and volume

A conversion between volume and mass rests on a density, and the density of bitumen falls as temperature rises. A figure taken at 25 °C and applied to material at 150 °C will not reconcile with a weighbridge. For custody transfer, what counts is the measurement your contract specifies.

Drum and container loading

Drums per container depends on drum dimensions, container dimensions, and the gross weight limit enforced on the road at destination — frequently the binding constraint rather than volume. Confirm the figure with your forwarder before booking.

Prime coat quantity

Area multiplied by a rate produces a number. It knows nothing about the texture of the surface, how much the base absorbs, or the trial section that should set the rate.

None of these is a survey, a stow plan or a mix design. They exist so a buyer can size an enquiry and sanity check a supplier's figure.

One further tool, the enquiry builder on the quotation page, does no arithmetic at all. It assembles a message out of what you type so you can read it over and edit it before you send it. Nothing it produces is a calculation, and nothing it produces is a quotation.

Certificates

What a Certificate of Analysis actually certifies

The certificate is the strongest technical document in a transaction, and narrower than most buyers read it to be.

Read precisely, it certifies four things and no more: the batch that was sampled, on the date it was sampled, by the test method named against each line, as measured by the laboratory that signed it.

  • It says nothing about the next batch. A certificate for production two months ago does not describe the material loading today.
  • It says nothing about the material after it left. Reheating, thermal cycling and water ingress all change a binder.
  • It is only as representative as its sampling. A sample from one drum at the container door describes that drum, not the lot.
  • A value without its method is not a value. Penetration under different conditioning, or viscosity at a different temperature, is a different measurement, not a discrepancy.

The pages on certificates, sampling and test methods give a checklist for reading one critically: whether values are measured or copied from the specification limits, and whether batch and date tie to your cargo. That checklist verifies no particular certificate. Where one is doubted, an independent laboratory testing a sealed retained sample settles it.

Reporting an error, and how this content is reviewed

An error on a technical page is worth reporting: someone else is reading the same number.

Send the page address and the wording

Quote the page address and the exact sentence or table cell, on WhatsApp or by email. A screenshot is harder to trace than text.

Name the source you checked against

The standard designation with its edition year, and the clause or table number. That turns a disagreement into a correction in minutes.

What then happens

The value is checked against the source. If the page is wrong it is corrected and the review date updated. If the difference is between editions, the page says which edition it describes.

The review cycle

Technical pages are reviewed on a rolling basis and at least annually, and immediately when a revision is reported. Each page shows when it was last reviewed. Superseded versions are not archived, so a saved page is not current.

Using the content

Frequently asked questions about the technical content

Can I use a specification table here as my project specification?

No. The tables give typical export ranges and standard limits for orientation. A project specification must be written from the edition your authority has adopted, and a cargo is defined by your contract.

A limit on your page differs from my copy of the standard. Which is right?

Your copy, if it is the edition your project is built to. The standard governs and the page yields. Send the page address, the designation and the edition year.

How do I tell a standard limit from a typical practice figure?

Pages label practice figures where they appear. As a rule of thumb, a value with a standard designation behind it is a limit. Temperatures, rates and dosages are practice.

Can I write your handling temperature range into a purchase contract?

Not as an acceptance criterion: no published document stands behind it. Temperatures belong in the method statement and mix design; contract criteria should be measurable properties, each with a method and edition named.

You suggest 60/70 for hot climates. Is that enough to choose a grade?

No, it is a starting point. Grade selection rests on measured pavement temperatures, traffic, and the national code in force, reconciled in a mix design by the engineer who signs for it.

Are the calculators accurate?

The arithmetic is exact; the answer is only as good as the assumptions stated with it. Density changes with temperature, and road weight limits differ by country. Plan with the output, then verify.

Does a Certificate of Analysis cover my whole shipment?

It covers the batch sampled, on the date sampled, by the methods named. Whether that describes your whole cargo depends on the sampling: spread it across the lot and seal retained samples.

How often is the technical content reviewed?

On a rolling basis and at least annually, and immediately when a reader reports a revision that has been missed. Each page shows when it was last reviewed.
